Nine-Layer Co-Extrusion PA/PE Laminating Film
VANTASE multi-layer co-extruded barrier film combines resins with different functions in one structure — so a single web can deliver heat-sealing performance, mechanical strength, and oxygen or moisture resistance at the same time.
For heat-sealing and packaging machinery, outer layers can use MDPE or HDPE to improve stiffness and processing stability, while inner layers use metallocene polyethylene (mPE) for reliable seal strength. Barrier layers use PA or EVOH depending on your shelf-life and product sensitivity targets.
What Is Co-Extrusion Barrier Film?
Multi-layer co-extrusion barrier film is produced by blown-film or cast co-extrusion. Three or more extruders melt functional resins — polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), nylon (PA), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), and tie layers — then converge at a multi-layer die. The web is blown or cast, cooled, and wound as roll stock.
Compared with adhesive lamination, co-extrusion forms the structure in one step. That reduces ink, adhesive, and additive residue concerns and can lower total process cost for food packaging programs.

Key Advantages
Multiple material properties in one film
Structure design lets you pair mechanical layers with seal layers and barrier layers instead of choosing one resin for everything. MDPE/HDPE supports stable feeding on form-fill-seal and bag-making lines; mPE inner layers improve heat-seal windows; PA and EVOH adjust oxygen and moisture blocking.
Cost and gauge control
One-step co-extrusion avoids separate composite or coating passes. That can reduce raw material waste and processing steps, and supports thinner gauges when barrier targets allow.
Flexible structure design
Film can be engineered as high, medium, or low barrier by changing layer materials and thickness. Color masterbatch placement supports transparent, white, black, and tinted rolls for branding or light-blocking needs.
Multilayer Structure Overview
Co-extruded films are generally built as symmetric (A/B/A) or asymmetric (A/B/C) stacks. Functional layers fall into three groups:
| Layer type | Role | Common materials |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier layer | Oxygen, moisture, and oil resistance | PA, EVOH; PA + EVOH sandwich for high barrier |
| Tie (adhesive) layer | Bond barrier and support layers; control peel strength | Matched to adjacent resin types |
| Support layer | Heat-seal inner face; printable or outer face | LDPE, LDPE/LLDPE blends, PA |
Typical 7-layer and 9-layer structures
| Structure | Barrier level |
|---|---|
| PA/Tie/PE/Tie/PA/Tie/PE | 7-layer medium barrier |
| PE/Tie/PA/Tie/PA/Tie/PE | 7-layer medium barrier |
| PA/Tie/PE/Tie/PA/EVOH/PE/Tie/PE | 9-layer high barrier |
| PE/Tie/PE/Tie/PE/EVOH/PE/Tie/PE | 9-layer high barrier |
Exact layer ratios and gauge should match your product, storage temperature, and converting equipment. VANTASE can recommend a structure after reviewing bag size, sealer type, and shelf-life target.

FAQ
What is the difference between medium and high barrier co-extrusion film?
Medium barrier structures typically use PA layers for oxygen and moisture resistance. High barrier structures add EVOH for stronger oxygen blocking — useful for MAP, protein, and longer shelf-life programs. Compare material choices in PA/PE vs PA/EVOH/PE vacuum bags.
Can this film be used for vacuum bags and PET lamination?
Yes. Roll stock can be converted into vacuum pouches or laminated with PET for lidding and printed flexible packaging. For finished embossed pouches, see transparent vacuum bags and vacuum seal rolls.
Do you support OEM width, thickness, and color?
VANTASE supports custom structure design, roll width, gauge, color masterbatch placement, and export packing. Share your sealer width, target barrier level, and monthly volume via contact for a tailored quote.
